I'm happy to report that, despite the crazy week, I've been able to stick with my schedule and I managed to read the first five chapters of The Silmarillion: Ainulindale, Valaquenta, Of the Beginning of the Days, Of Aulë and Yavanna, and Of the Coming of the Elves and the Captivity of Melkor.
These are the foundations of the entire book and might sound a bit boring for some people, because the events are told like a myth at the beginning and the real action comes after a bunch of pages. It's always difficult for me to remember all the relationships among the Valar and their "powers" too, that's why I'm super grateful for that Silmarillion Guide I mentioned last week.
I won't write a summary of the chapters here, but I'd like to share with you that Melian is my favorite character of the entire book!
"Melian was the name of a Maia who served both Vàna and Estë; she dwelt long in Lòrien, tending the trees that flower in the gardens of Irmo, ere she came to Middle-earth. Nightingales sang about her wherever she went."
I'm so excited to read a whole chapter about her and her husband, Thingol, next week!
We also met Sauron for the first time in these few chapters! He wasn't the super most evil character at that time, because he was a servant of Melkor, but he wasn't a good guy at all.
"Among those of his servants that have names the greatest was that spirit whom the Eldar called Sauron, or Gorthaur the Cruel."
Finally, we met the Elves and the Dwarves for the first time. It's always super hard to me remembering all the different group of Elves and what path they followed. I even noted them in a journal last time I've read the book. I should check it out again!
I hope to be able to stick with my schedule again next week, I like this accountability moment to share my progress!
